Maurice Ravel equally gave his Sonatina a nickname, albeit an unofficial one, namely “Dutch sonatina”. He composed the work after a visit to the Netherlands; the turning windmill blades he saw there can be heard in the whirling last movement. The part before the intermission will finish with one of the most intriguing works of the twentieth century: György Ligeti’s Musica ricercata, literally “searching music”, in which Ligeti combined new composition techniques with various traditional elements, including Hungarian folk rythms and the counterpoint of Girolamo Frescobaldi. After the intermission, you will hear an undisputed cornerstone of the romantic pianistic literature: the monumental Third Sonata opus 5 by Johannes Brahms.
